Great location in older hotel with history. Helpful and friendly staff. Great dining room with views over Havana.

The internet in Cuba could only be accessed on single use 1hour internet cards. Once connected the speed was generally good.

Terrible

The first room we were taken to was so small we had no space to open our suitcases and the lights did not work. The second room we were taken to had 2 single beds and was dirty however we could open our suitcases. We were then offered a third room which my husband viewed but was no better than the second room so we never moved again. This meant single beds for 5 nights. When we used the toilet in our room it flooded the floor, maintenance got a maid to come and clean the mess and then showed us that we had to flush for only a few seconds then pull back up, this was never fixed for the length of our stay. As mentioned previously the rooms were not clean, we advised the reception staff who shrugged and then we got notes with love hearts from the cleaners, the room was serviced each day but the dust was still weeks possibly months old. One day we got in the lift and water was pouring down the lift shaft, we quickly jumped out of the lift and they were later closed meaning we has to use the service lift. Every night when we returned to the hotel our keycards had to be reset, I was advised not to put next to my mobile phone and another night I was advised not to put next to my credit cards. When we checked out a manger came to speak to us and advised he'd pay for our taxi to the airport then a staff member advised that was not possible in Cuba so they refunded a meal we had which was some compensation. The manger advised he'd investigate the cleanliness of the room and be in touch via email, that was one month ago and still no email. When we mentioned the leak in the lifts, he said the building is old. Maybe they should close sand resolve their maintenance issue before charging over 320 Australian Dollars per night for a small dirty room.

Could be much better

The location of the hotel was very good. Right next to the Fine Arts and Revolution museums, El Prado and withing walking distance from the Old Town. The hotel staff was very polite and very attentive. On Friday night, there were free cocktails at 6-6.30 pm, which was a pleasant surprise. We also met the General Manager of the hotel there, who was very nice and attentive to our needs. The breakfast on the top floor was way better than the one on the ground floor. The different kinds of music performed live by different groups throughout the day at the patio and inside the hotel were a nice touch.

Our room bathtub needs to be replaced as soon as possible!! It was disgusting and I had to convince myself about entering it. The scent of mold was very intense. Dinner at the top floor was overpriced and the portions were very small. The snack bar at the lobby was much better. The wifi could be free for guests.

Started Excitingly, Ended Disastrously

We loved the location, the lobby feel, the building’s history, the night vibes which were fueled by constant amazing bands. Rafael at reception went out of his way numerous times to try and make our stay a comfortable one.

The negatives ended up making our stay a disastrous one. They were almost all due to the building’s tiredness. It needs a major overhaul to bring back it’s complete charm. We had to change rooms on 3 of the 4 nights due to the following: First room: - Toilet clogged all the time, causing multiple awkward moments. - Shower head pointed at the wall rather than downwards, you could not tilt it down. Only option was to hold it. Second room: - No AC. Solution was to switch to a less favorable room at 12am. Problem was reported at 4pm. - Toilet continuously spilled water onto the floor - Some wall outlets did not work, or forced us to pick between charging our phones or having a bedside lamp. - Painting and people working loudly at our doorstep 9am. Third room: - Cockroach came out the sink while in use. - Other people’s belongings were at some point put in our room.

We enjoyed out stay and would return to this hotel if we ever return to Havana.

We loved the location which was very convenient for visiting Old Havana and nearby museums. The 9/F restaurant was excellent for breakfast and particularly in the evening when the staff were very professional and the food was excellent. The cleaning staff for the rooms were also excellent - our room was kept clean and very tidy. Despite being quite an old hotel pretty much everything worked most of the time.

The patio Sevillana on the G/F featured good music but the selection and quality of the food was very disappointing - service was also slow, with a 40 minute wait for the bill despite several reminders.

Lovely staff, spotlessly clean room, great atmosphere and superb location.

We stayed there for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Our room was spotless and the beds were very comfortable. We had a magnificent view of Havana from our room. The staff were super friendly. We had breakfast on the top floor, wow an amazing room offering views all around, the choices at breakfast was good whilst eating sparrows would fly in through the open balcony doors, giving you the feeling you were eating outside. The location of the hotel is superb, we would definitely go back.

Great location and staff. Building is beautiful and the lobby and restaurants are beautifully restored but the rooms still need a bit of work

We left our hearts at the Mercure Seville, Habana old City...... A.......mazing

An incredible surprise awaited us whenn we arrived at the steps to the Mercure Seville Hotel in the Old City, time stood still as we walked into the huge lobby reception area dating back pre Castro we were stunned by the pre-revolution decor and original photographs of Fidel and Chez adorning every wall. The all girl 6 piece Cuban band playing Latin rhythms put us in the mood for dancing the Salsa classes in the week ahead. After checking in the sound of the latin beat followed us up through the Atrium to our room on the 7th floor, ,a large airy room with fantastic views on all 4 sides from the huge windows, and the biggest bed we have ever seen ( another surprise|) the concierge told us, big enough to sleep! Certainly comfy enough. . Each morning an excellent full English or Contintental breakfast was served by polite, efficient staff pouring fresh coffee as our cups were emptied, all one needed to start a full day of exploration ahead. We could not fault the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at this hotel they were exceptional in making us feel very welcome. The Help Desk was our saviour we could not have done without our visits to chat to Pupo , Anabel and Paul, who gave us tips on getting around amongst the local Cubanas rather than Turisticos. For all guests and anyone not staying in the hotel the best dining and views over the city are at the Mercure Seville. We spent a very special evening enjoying the unususal gourmet food, like carpacio de langoustino, drinking Mojitos watching the sun set over the spectacular views of Habana and enjoying dancing to the romantic rhythms of the Cuban band. Definitely we will be back to the Mercure Seville, in Habana to experience and live in a happy, smiling environment in the heart of the old city throbbing with latin rhythms by day and evening, silent by night as time stands still in this awesome city which has the WOW factor primero!!!!!

The only fault we could find was the inedible bar foodserved in the Patio/lounge area. Definitely not recommendedto eat there, although the Mojitos were good!!! Bands playing amazing rhythms.

Staff made up for my gripes

Location was excellent and some of the staff were better than good, food was excellent for breakfast, the bar and food were excellent, enjoyed the evening meal in the garden lounge with the entertainment no internet and poor wifi

Room was not to the Accor standard, pool closure at 6.00 pm when daylight finishes 8.00 pm, service of a broken lift button did not occur for the 4 days I was there, cracked hand sink, antiquated shower rose and shower over the bath when the bath was so old it should be used as a horse water trough

loved it and would stay again

full of olde world charm and historical mafia connections to discover. stayed on the sixth floor which had previously been the floor where Al Capone and his whole entourage had taken over in the early part of the last century. Weird to think one of his 'gang' will have stayed in our room. Lovely breakfast the following morning and the roof top bar is lovely.

Like many government partnered hotels in Havana, the Mercure...

Like many government partnered hotels in Havana, the Mercure is very much 'faded grandeur' - this goes with the territory! The bed was very comfortable and pool area more than sufficed. Wonderful live music in the gorgeous bar, all day and into the evening. The porters were very helpful. Fabulous location, beautiful building.

Our two main gripes were: no drinking water provided in the room (priced at £250 a night) - we were told to buy it at the bar and take it to our room; secondly the staff (with the lovely exceptions of the porters) were sullen, slow to serve, keen to have a long chat between themselves rather than serve customers, or give eye contact, or even smile at their customers. This is in stark contrast to the wonderful and warm service we received in the Casa Particulares we stayed in. Also in stark contrast to the general demeanour of the Cubans who are warm, friendly and always very helpful. Odd.

I recommend do not stay at this hotel

Dinner on the top floor was great. Location ok.

Overall experience was terrible and decided to leave two days early. Staff more interested in talking with each other than helping guests. Not a friendly atmosphere. Food was terrible with stale bread, breakfast cereals served and requesting a bowl for breakfast was like asking for a kidney from the staff. Never had such a terrible breakfast. I also had bed bugs during the stay. Beds uncomfortable. Music is nice but gets a bit tiring after a while. I have stayed at hundreds of hotels across the world and never written a review. This is my first for the reason it is just terrible and to share my experience with others.

Great location and lovely communal spaces.

The communal areas of this hotel were absolutely stunning. The history of the hotel was really interesting. The bar staff in the bar downstairs were brilliant, very attentive and invited us to dance to the band, which was great. The location, right in the heart of Havana Vieja, was also fantastic.

The bedrooms vary considerably. Some are very small; others smell of damp; whereas others are nice. The amenities in the room don’t always function properly either. We stayed in four other hotels across Cuba during our stay and didn’t have this issue.

Mercure seville stay

Cleaners were very good. Location was great. Pool was well maintained and clean. The size of bedroom and room itself was good. Staff generally vety good.

Quality of food needs improvement. Not the best fruit or cooked items. The pastries were dry. The bathroom in our room needed updating.

Appaling

Good location in La Havana Veija (Old town), next door to the Museo de la Revolucion. The breakfast was good and served timely, with good coffee too.

Other than the location of this hotel, we are appalled by the quality, price and cleanliness. Havana/Cuba is overpriced itself for tourists, but where isn't. The issue is that the quality is just so poor. The food is below par for a '5*' hotel (this is not a 5* hotel by European standards. Our evening meal took far too long to be served as the kitchen could not cope with a full restaurant and the food did not make up for it. The main issue however, is the cleanliness of the hotel. We asked for a late checkout the following day so we could relax and shower/change etc., before our flight. We were told this would be no problem at all and we should come down to reception in the following morning to pay 30 CUCs to do so. In the morning, we were told they were now fully booked and the late checkout was not possible. We were informed the luggage could be stored in the luggage room while we spent the day by the pool and we could shower and change ready for our flight in the pool showers. We found no working showers in the pool facilities, one dead cockroach, and one dead worm, photos attached. We were then offered an apology by the hotel manager who simply explained, 'this is Cuba' and offered us a room to shower/get changed - so they had availability in the first place. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone as it is unfit for purpose. We travelled around Cuba, staying in a variety of accommodation - independent casa's, smaller hotels and one larger 5* resort. In all of which, we found the cleanliness to be perfect, the accommodation comfortable and clean, so we refute the 'this is Cuba' stance of the management (a top end group of hotels such as Mercure should be able to get a grip on issues promptly). The sheer lack of competence by the management at this hotel that unfortunately has been the detriment to a lovely building.

A hotel with lots of atmosphere but not really a 5 star hotel and worth $500/night

The hotel is well situated for both old Havana and the not so old Havana :-) There is live music in the hotel every night in a very nice indoor courtyard. The staff are helpful and are able to provide good advice on where to go within the city. The top floor restaurant has great views of Havana.

The first room that we were offered was tiny and had ripped curtains that couldn't even be closed. We complained about our room and was immediately given a much larger cleaner room with curtains. We paid $500 per night and then we were expected to tip the musicians in the breakfast room and outdoor courtyard. At that price the hotel should be paying them to come in and perform. The music in the courtyard is loud and finishes at 11pm every night. This would be a problem when staying in a room over the courtyard if guests need an early night for an early start the next day. The cleaning is a bit hit and miss where it is not easy to get to. The hotel will not exchange Australian dollars for Cuban convertible pesos.
